In this week’s fascinating show, Dr. J’s and Dr. Bunny’s conversation ranges from epidurals, to childbirth, to pain, to heart disease, stroke, and finally to the transition we all make at the end of our lives.
Dr. J just got back from Las Vegas where he attended a medical convention. They discussed epidurals and the different techniques doctors use when applying the treatment. Dr. J describes an epidural: Medicine is placed (injected) around the spinal cord to reduce inflammation and decrease pain. Epidurals can be used for knee replacements, hip replacements, and childbirth.
An OB/GYN for 30 years, Dr. J has seen a lot of childbirth. In the case of epidurals, Dr. J leaves it up to the mom. There are a lot of options. Some women choose epidurals, others choose natural childbirth, and others – intravenous medication. Dr. J believes that whatever keeps the patient safe is the way to go.
Times have changed and the attitude toward birthing has changed as well. It used to be that people thought childbirth was just a painful and horrible experience. Twilight sleep was used and moms woke up not connected to the baby next to them. Eventually it became recognized that women want to be present to their birthing experience. Despite the pain, they consider it a joyous experience!
Listen to this week’s show for more details on childbirth and deep conversation on the many twists and turns of life!
