For this week’s Labor Day show, (no pun intended!) Dr. Johannes Ramirez, OB/GYN, and Nurse Jennifer Strong, talk with Dr. Bunny Vreeland about the joy of being part of the birthing process!
Dr. J is on a 36 hour shift at Saint John’s Hospital in Oxnard and the mood is upbeat and serene. If you hear a slight “humm” in the background… that is the sound of a busy hospital.
Dr. J wants to be ready for the births when they happen. The goal, he says, is to be relaxed, and keep the energy light and calm.
The most important thing in his life was having a baby; The best part of his job is seeing the joy on the mom’s and dad’s faces!
Just then, Dr. Bunny notices music being played over the loudspeaker. Jennifer says that they play a lullaby every time a baby is born at the hospital so everyone in the building knows of the event!
When a mom comes into the hospital, the first thing that happens is that she is assessed on where she is in her labor. Dr. J works with the nurses to keep the mom and baby safe – monitoring them throughout the process. Jennifer says that they are there to support the mom in having the experience she wants.
Unlike years ago, there are many options for families and the moms have a lot of freedom. Moms can walk around, get massages from family members, bring their doulas with them, take a warm bath, and get medication or not get medication. Grandmas, Grandpas, sisters, cousins, and children are allowed to be there for the event! Dr. J and Jennifer remember one mom who wanted Gregorian chants, wind chimes, and low lighting. They hummed the chants for her – it was peaceful and uplifting. Listen to the show for a demonstration by Dr. J!
Dr. J. who has been doctoring for 30 years, relates how some of the children come back and have babies of their own. He is on his second generation and about to start his third!
Listen in to Dr. J’s inspiring show and find out more about childbirth!
