Q&A with CIPCUG Session 41

Lisa Toth  My Medicare gap insurance has offered a series of classes to reduce the chances of diabetes. Since my doctor said I am close to being pre diabetic, I decided to sign up. They use go to meeting, and provided a link. I clicked on the link and followed the instructions. I cannot find the app on my computer!

Tony Pizza   When I opened Chrome browser on my phone, I got a popup that said my Android phone was 28% corrupted by four viruses, probably from visiting adult sites, and that if I continued to use the phone it would be damaged. A convenient “click here” to fix was provided. I used the phone’s go-back, and a screen from “Google” appeared, also with a “fix”.  I shut the phone off, googled “four Virus android” with my computer, and found a fairly widespread malware. It was gone next time I used the phone.

John Weigle   The FCC issued a warning on saying “yes” if a phone caller asks, “Can you hear me?”

Lisa Toth   I am considering Amazon Prime.  What do you think about amazon prime?

News Item:  Windows Vista reaches end of life on April 11.

News Item:  A group of hackers called the “Turkish Crime Family” claims to have gained access to hundreds of millions of iCloud and Apple email accounts. They are giving Apple until April 7 to pay $700,000 or they say they will wipe every victims’ gadget remotely and reset their iCloud accounts.

A Flight Simulator built by VCC

Lisa Toth:   I use windows live for email on 3 email accounts. If I am not careful when sending an email it goes out on the wrong account. I went into settings and made my primary account the default but that did not help.

Bill Hinds:    I drowned my Galaxy s5. Do you think it is restorable?

Bunny Vreeland:  An adult friend of mine wants to buy a new computer for home and business use. Do you have a recommendation for a good, reasonably priced computer?  Requirements are: Light weight. Long battery life. Spread sheet. Word. Large memory or a way to store content.  How do you save the address book and contact info to the new computer?  Are there any glaring issues for him to look out for or avoid?

Feel free to visit Ventura County Computers for a custom made PC, it is single handedly one of their favorite requests because their creativity gets to come out and play.  One client who was working on his pilot licence asked if they could build a home PC type Flight Simulator so they can probably handle most anything you throw their way.   vcccomputers.com

Most Flight Simulator software is for fooling around. This is almost the real deal. All the controls, the pedals, the yoke, the dials and switches, etc. are all designed to emulate a Cessna Citation. The client is working on his pilot’s license. Not pictured are the other two monitors, giving an approximation of what you’d see looking out of the window of the Citation.

Whatever you want, we can build it for you.

News Item:  Some needed improvements to Windows Updates in the coming version — if you are Windows 10 Pro or Enterprise (not, unfortunately Home).

Bill Hinds:   How do I delete my Facebook account (it’s not for me!)?

Bunny Vreeland:  How do you know when/if the Cloud is backing up your information? Is this automatic or do we have to ‘tell’ it to back up?

Linda From SCV   new Macbook pro – wanted legacy genealogy program that sister has. Legacy site said she could load it if she can load Windows through Bootcamp. She doesn’t know anything about Bootcamp or what it is

Denny From SCV  – Every time he’s off his computer for 15 minutes he has to sign back in. How can he stop having to log-in via a password.

Bill Hinds:  When I try to use Acronis Disk Director, I get message that I’m using a Demo, and it does not work. I got this disk from a raffle at a CIPCUG meeting and it worked before I added a new Solid State drive to my system

Orv Beach:   Got a Netgear router? You’ll want to update the firmware if you haven’t done it in a while.

Sandy Tsutsui-Trujillo:   Would you provide information on online tax filing and recommendations on how to protect ourselves…I assume we know the standard antivirus, malware. Etc

Lisa Toth:  Every once in awhile, my phone screen gets the dreaded gray screen. I have restarted it to get my screen back sometimes just pressing the power button fixes it. I have a windows phone. A Lumia.

Bunny Vreeland:   Regarding an article that said anyone could find out anything about you:  Is it true?  How much information about us is out there?

Lisa Toth: I have updated adobe flash many times but I still have trouble watching things I trust. Could this be a setting in Firefox?

Bunny Vreeland:   How did you learn so much about computers? How does someone learn how to be a WebMaster in today’s world? And, how can we keep up with all the changes and upgrades?

Jerry Crocker: A question about: file history; file history took over my drive and filled it up! When did this get turned on?

Sue Nethercott: What are the main causes of a computer becoming slower and slower over time? And is the software that is supposed to cure it any good?

Craig Ladd:  Will Android become dominant OS eventually?

Sue Nethercott: I tried changing the setting, and it made no difference – still 5 out of sequence tweets at the top. Which is odd, since articles like http://www.wired.co.uk/…/twitter-non-chronological… said it would – at least for your timeline. Maybe searches are different.

Sue Nethercott: Amazon has just launched a British version of Echo. Is it any good? What privacy concerns are there?

Sue Nethercott:  Millions’ of Volkswagen cars can be unlocked via hack.

Please see link for more information but they are having a devil of a time with this right now!

A New Wireless Hack Can Unlock 100 Million Volkswagens

Success Story!

Roger Houston:  Just after our August CIPCUG meeting and warnings about opening attachments or clicking on linkages, I reviewed an email sent to my spouse. She responded to some form of advertisement, maybe on Facebook, for FREE Moisturizer & Eye Serum. Just gave them her credit card # to pay S/H of $4.95. We quickly received a short email back to “Confirm Order” that included an Attachment named: Puchasing098712345323.tar.xz

I promptly scanned it with my Bitdefender Total Security product. This gave a popup: “Threats were found” Trojan.GenericKD.3476327. I isolated it, and will shortly shred it. I am super happy and lucky I decided to follow the club’s advice. The credit card immediately had two small charges instead of one. I promptly called the Visa company and had this card and number replaced! >> Follow good advice!
