Dr. Johannes Ramirez – Vitality and Wellness Centers: Obesity – A Health Risk – Are You Ready To Lose Weight?

In this week’s show, Dr. J and Dr. Bunny discuss the history and solutions to the nation-wide problem of obesity.

As medical professionals, Dr. J and Dr. Bunny declare that the bottom line: It is not healthy to be obese!

No one is immune to the problem. Some of our favorite celebrities have died prematurely because of obesity caused conditions like heart failure and diabetes.

Obesity: Causes risk to the heart and internal organs. People risk heart attacks, diabetes and life-threatening conditions.

There are problems to overcome in fighting obesity. It is harder to exercise and there is no instant gratification. You may be on a treadmill for an hour and sweating – but you may have only burned 80 calories and that is not even a pound!

Junk food is cheap and plentiful and we have all gotten used to over-sized portions while healthy food costs more. The bottom line is that it is not easy to lose weight. The good news is that help is here!

Dr. Johannes Ramirez Boden – Positive Thinking?

As usual, Dr. J and Dr. Bunny discuss all kinds of subjects… In today’s show, they discuss, ‘Positive Thinking’ and how it affects our way of life and the many ‘challenges’ we face every day.
For example, take the idea that we could have a man on the moon. JFK promoted the idea and the nation jumped in to support it. We all got behind the idea and it happened!
And, did you know that Playtex had a huge part in the design and creation of the space suit for the moon landing? Dr. J recounts the story of how the women employees at Playtex were challenged with the idea that a BRA company could build a better space suit. And, they did! They built the spacesuit in 6 weeks and came in a million dollars under budget! Other bidders wanted 3 years to build the space suit. The staff at Playtex got behind the idea that they COULD build a space suit and did it!
Tune in and see how  Positive Thinking can change way of thinking and your life! You will be glad you did!

Dr. Johannes Ramirez Boden – Let’s talk about MediCare

In today’s show, Dr. J and Dr. Bunny discuss Medicare.  If Medicare seems confusing to you, you’re not alone!  Medicare is very confusing for many people.  Even when you think you know it all & have got yourself covered, you may find a big surprise that no one at Medicare can seem to explain (or fix!).

Dr. Bunny and Dr. J share a recent personal experience (and frustration) with Medicare. Dr. Bunny is heavily insured with Medicare, and Medicare supplements, but after some recent routine tests that were ordered by her doctor (Dr. J), a $500 bill showed up!  And so began the frustrating and seemingly endless process of trying to find out WHY.

Tune in and hear more details about this very important topic!

Dr. Johannes Ramirez Boden – Continuing the discussion on CBD

Continuing their discussion about CBD use from the last show (8/12/19), Dr. J and Dr. Bunny delve deeper into the subject CBD and move to the subject of addiction.
Dr. J begins the show by announcing that Denver, Colorado has just legalized ‘magic mushrooms’. He says that you can now buy and consume many phycadelics in Colorado.
Dr. Bunny asks, “Where will it end?”
Dr. J mentions that 1 – 2% of the population have an ‘addictive personality’ and will be addicted to SOMETHING in their life. It could be food, cigarettes, shoes, sports or any other temporary ‘feel good’ object that fills a ‘need’ at the moment.
So, what is an addiction?
Addiction is a condition in which a person engages in the use of a substance or in a behavior for which the rewarding effects provide a compelling incentive to repeatedly pursue the behavior despite detrimental consequences. Addiction may involve the use of substances such as alcohol, inhalants, opioids, cocaine, nicotine, and others, or behaviors such as gambling.
There is scientific evidence that the addictive behaviors share key neurobiological features: They intensely involve brain pathways of reward and reinforcement, affecting motivation, which involve the neurotransmitter dopamine.
And, in keeping with other highly motivated states, they lead to the pruning of synapses in the prefrontal cortex, home of the brain’s highest functions, so that attention is highly focused on cues related to the target substance or activity.
Good news: It is important to know that the brain changes are reversible after the substance use or behavior is discontinued.
Complex conditions that affect reward, reinforcement, motivation, and memory systems of the brain, substance use and gambling disorders are characterized by impaired control over usage; social impairment, involving disruption of everyday activities and relationships; and may involve craving.
Continuing use is typically harmful to relationships and work or school obligations.
Because addiction affects the brain’s executive functions, centered in the prefrontal cortex, individuals who develop an addiction may not be aware that their behavior is causing problems for themselves and others.
Over time, the pursuit of the pleasurable effects of the substance or behavior may dominate an individual’s activities.
Although all addictions have the capacity to induce a sense of hopelessness and feelings of failure, as well as shame and guilt, research documents that recovery is the rule rather than the exception, and that there are many routes to recovery. Individuals can achieve improved physical, psychological, and social functioning on their own—so-called natural recovery.

Dr. Johannes Ramirez Boden. Let’s talk about CBD.

On today’s show, Part 1 of a 2 part ‘series’ on the subject of CBD, Dr. J and Dr. Bunny discuss the long and fascinating history of ‘the evil weed’. While they agree that the background of cannabis is fascinating and long standing, it is also confusing.
So, where did it all begin? How did it start?  Who were the first group of people to use ‘pot’? How did they use it?
Did it begin in the 20s and 30s with the beatniks or later, in the 60 and 70s, with the hippies?
Dr. J tells us, that  there is archeological evidence that the cultivation and use of cannabis has been around, used and cultivated, for over ‘200,000 years’.  He says that the natives of Asia, India and native America used  it for medicine, ointments, rituals, textiles and clothing. And hemp has been used for ropes. Did you know that hemp was the #1 rope used in shipping? Dr. J  mentions how sturdy it is as well as that the plant ‘grows like a weed’.
Dr. J and Dr. Bunny compare the current CBD climate to Alcohol and Prohibition. Trying to make it illegal only created more interest and use. A  lot of people got rich and a lot of people went to jail as a result of Prohibition. And, to add to the confusion, thirty-three states and the District of Columbia currently have passed laws broadly legalizing marijuana in some form.
The District of Columbia and 11 states — Alaska, California, Colorado, Illinois, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Nevada, Oregon, Vermont and Washington — have adopted the most expansive laws legalizing marijuana for recreational use. Illinois became the second most-populous state to legalize recreational marijuana. Vermont became the first state to legalize marijuana for recreational use through the legislative process, rather than via a ballot measure. Vermont’s law allows for adults age 21 and over to grow and possess small amounts of cannabis. However, it does not permit the sale of nonmedical cannabis. Some other state laws similarly decriminalized marijuana, but did not initially legalize retail sales. Very confusing.
Most other states allow for limited use of medical marijuana under certain circumstances. Some medical marijuana laws are broader than others, with types of medical conditions that allow for treatment varying from state to state. Louisiana, West Virginia and a few other states allow only for cannabis-infused products, such as oils or pills.
A number of states have also decriminalized the possession of small amounts of marijuana.
This show continues next week when we will learn more about this controversial subject.
