What is Entomology? Here’s what Wikipedia has to say:
Entomology is the scientific study of insects, a branch of zoology. In the past the term “insect” was more vague, and historically the definition of entomology included the study of terrestrial animals in other arthropod groups or other phyla, such as arachnids, myriapods, earthworms, land snails, and slugs. This wider meaning may still be encountered in informal use.

Like several of the other fields that are categorized within zoology, entomology is a taxon-based category; any form of scientific study in which there is a focus on insect-related inquiries is, by definition, entomology. Entomology therefore overlaps with a cross-section of topics as diverse as molecular genetics, behavior, biomechanics, biochemistry, systematics, physiology, developmental biology, ecology, morphology, paleontology, mathematics, anthropology, robotics, agriculture, nutrition, forensic science, and more.

At some 1.3 million described species, insects account for more than two-thirds of all known organisms, date back some 400 million years, and have many kinds of interactions with humans and other forms of life on earth.

About Mr. Bob Kildee:

Bob Kildee was a Michigan native and father of five was best known for his clothing store, Bob Kildee Clothing, a Camarillo mainstay that first opened in Old Town in 1954. Kildee’s store, first called Bob Kildee Shop for Men, opened on Glenn Drive in Old Town nearly a decade before Camarillo officially became a city. It was a gamble for small business man but one that paid off.

Kildee’s involvement in the community included numerous service and business organizations. In the 1960s, Kildee headed a committee to bring parks to Camarillo that would eventually become the Pleasant Valley Recreation and Park District. He served on the park district’s board of directors for eight years— seven of which were spent as its chair.

Kildee also took part in the committee that helped develop the Camarillo master plan and its official incorporation as a city in 1964.

Kildee was the president of both the Pleasant Valley and Camarillo Lions clubs, as well as a member of the Camarillo Chamber of Commerce’s board of directors and a member of the Patients’ Benefit Board for Camarillo State Hospital.
In 1989, Kildee was named an honorary Don of the city by the Pleasant Valley Historical Society.

Always a proponent of the city’s local businesses, he was recognized as Camarillo Man of the Year by the Chamber in 1975 and was named a Pillar of the Community in 2007.

Born in northern Michigan, Kildee came to Ventura County in 1948 to work at the Naval Air Missile Test Center at Point Mugu for Globe Aircraft. He would soon meet a young Somis woman named Barbara Culbert, and the two married in 1951. A mother of five, Barbara Kildee died in 1988 after 37 years of marriage.

Kildee then married Maggie Heacock Erickson, a former Ventura County supervisor, in 1991. Bob and Maggie Kildee, who share seven children and nine grandchildren, had been married for 19 years when he passed away in 2010, at the age of 90.

About Parabens:
What are Parabens and why is Paraben-free important?
Parabens are preservatives that are frequently added to cosmetics to prevent bacteria growth. They’ve been used since the 1950’s. You will frequently see methylparaben, propylparaben and butylparaben on the ingredient list and these are the parabens to avoid.

Numerous studies have been conducted on parabens, but why should we avoid them? Parabens have been identified as xenoestrogens, meaning they mimic estrogen in the body. This has been linked to breast cancer and reproductive issues. Researchers have located parabens in breast tumors and believe there is a relationship between parabens and tumors. In the July 2002 issue of the Archives of Toxicology, Dr. S. Oishi of the Department of Toxicology, Tokyo Metropolitan Research Laboratory of Public Health reported that newborn male mammals exposed to butylparaben “adversely affects the secretion of testosterone and the function of the male reproductive system.”

Parabens all to appear to be stored in your body, which has a cumulative effect and, over time, may damage health. While there may be no official scientific evidence to confirm that parabens directly cause cancer, it is good to be mindful of the use of parabens. The good thing is that many paraben-free products can be found, so it is possible to avoid them if you are concerned.

Ask Dr. Bunny. What is RAIN Communities? David Kohlmeier, guest.

Dr. Bunny and David Kohlmeier

Dr. Bunny and David Kohlmeier

David Kohlmeier, President of the Board of Directors of RAIN Communities, joins Dr. Bunny to discuss being homeless, finding faith, and how RAIN Communities helps people to transition from homelessness to permanent housing. An absolutely amazing, and uplifting, interview!

About RAIN Transitional Living Center:
A bridge to permanent housing…
Since 1997, the RAIN Transitional Living Center (RAIN) has provided housing and services to families and single adults in Ventura County, California, to help with the transition from homelessness to permanent housing.

Serving up to 70 people at a time in a home-like setting in Camarillo, RAIN provides nutritious meals; intensive case management services; employment assistance including transportation to work; life skills courses on topics such as money management, parenting, and relapse prevention; and privately-funded enrichment programs for children.

Some facts about homelessness:

A 2003 survey by the Ventura County Homeless and Housing Coalitions (VCHHC) revealed the following findings: the majority of homeless in Ventura County are women and children; the homeless population is growing – 51% were newly homeless (6 months or less); people are remaining homeless longer- 37% homeless 2 or more years compared to 28% in 2002; disabled people comprise 1/3 of the sheltered population; those sheltered are long time County residents –59% have lived locally for 10 years or more; and 34% were working at least part time but were not making a living wage. Rapidly growing housing rents have outpaced the growth in wages leaving more families, particularly single working mothers, behind.

How can I help?
Become a Partner in Transforming Lives:

Homeless families and individuals working to make a new start in life need community support and comprehensive resources beyond the restrictions often attached to public funding. Therefore, RAIN Communities, Inc., a nonprofit 501(c)(3), partners with the County of Ventura to provide funding for special programs at RAIN, including counseling, childcare, and fun activities for the children and their parents.

Half of RAIN’s residents are children. Field trips, gardening, arts, and other enrichment activities funded by RAIN Communities, Inc. are important parts of the RAIN program, helping children whose lives have been so difficult feel more like “regular kids.

To volunteer at RAIN (individual and group volunteer projects are welcome) please call RAIN Communities, Inc. at (805) 482-5063. You can also help by making tax-deductible in-kind, or financial donation that will help a RAIN resident make a new start in life.
