What is an aneurysm? (From Wikipedia)

An aneurysm is a localized, abnormal, weak spot on a blood vessel wall that causes an outward bulging, likened to a bubble or balloon. Aneurysms are a result of a weakened blood vessel wall, and may be a result of a hereditary condition or an acquired disease. Aneurysms can also be a nidus (starting point) for clot formation (thrombosis) and embolization. The word is from Greek: ἀνεύρυσμα, aneurysma, “dilation”, from ἀνευρύνειν, aneurynein, “to dilate”. As an aneurysm increases in size, the risk of rupture increases, leading to uncontrolled bleeding. Although they may occur in any blood vessel, particularly lethal examples include aneurysms of the Circle of Willis in the brain, aortic aneurysms affecting the thoracic aorta, and abdominal aortic aneurysms. Aneurysms can arise in the heart itself following a heart attack, including both ventricular and atrial septal aneurysms.

melissa_dukerMelissa Duker, Mary Kay Cosmetics Independent Sales Director, joins Dr. Bunny to discuss a very special project that she and her Mary Kay associates have put together: Chemo Care Bags for anyone going through chemotherapy.

Each Chemo Care Bag contains safe, paraben-free products including facial cleansing cloths, extra emollient night cream, satin lip balm, soft socks, lavender bath ball, and so much more. Melissa and her colleagues are hoping to get these special Chemo Care bags out to anyone in Ventura County that is going through chemotherapy and can benefit from them.

Melissa and her Mary Kay Associates are accepting donations for the Chemo Care Bag project. This is a not-for-profit venture – ALL donations will go into making more Chemo Care Bags for chemotherapy patients.

Each Chemo Care Bag is $30 to make (the cost of the products only) and any donations are greatly appreciated so that these bags can be given for FREE to chemotherapy patients.

About Parabens:
What are Parabens and why is Paraben-free important?
Parabens are preservatives that are frequently added to cosmetics to prevent bacteria growth. They’ve been used since the 1950’s. You will frequently see methylparaben, propylparaben and butylparaben on the ingredient list and these are the parabens to avoid.

Numerous studies have been conducted on parabens, but why should we avoid them? Parabens have been identified as xenoestrogens, meaning they mimic estrogen in the body. This has been linked to breast cancer and reproductive issues. Researchers have located parabens in breast tumors and believe there is a relationship between parabens and tumors. In the July 2002 issue of the Archives of Toxicology, Dr. S. Oishi of the Department of Toxicology, Tokyo Metropolitan Research Laboratory of Public Health reported that newborn male mammals exposed to butylparaben “adversely affects the secretion of testosterone and the function of the male reproductive system.”

Parabens all to appear to be stored in your body, which has a cumulative effect and, over time, may damage health. While there may be no official scientific evidence to confirm that parabens directly cause cancer, it is good to be mindful of the use of parabens. The good thing is that many paraben-free products can be found, so it is possible to avoid them if you are concerned.
