SNAP! Unhypnotizing Hypnotherapy. How is the medical field addressing opioid addiction? Gloria Miele, Ph.D., guest.

Gloria Miele, Ph.D., joins Dr. Bunny to discuss opioid addiction and how changes in the medical field are geared toward helping the opioid addiction epidemic.

Gloria is a psychologist & worked for many years in training, research and practice around substance abuse disorders.  She shares great information and statistics from her extensive work.

Gloria also discusses the medicines that are currently used to help opioid addictions, how they work, and what the options are.

As the UCLA Health Learning Collaborative Coordinator, she provides training, facilitation and technical assistance to support the state-wide implementation of The California Hub and Spoke System (CA H&SS), a grant-funded approach designed to combat the opioid epidemic. The project focuses on expanding access to empirically-based, medication assisted treatments (MAT) for opioid use disorders and putting sustainable systems in place to support recovery. Role includes subject matter training, community outreach, provider support, team building and leadership development.

About the UCLA Integrated Substance Abuse Program:

The UCLA Integrated Substance Abuse Programs (ISAP), organized within the Department of Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, works to:

  • Develop and evaluate new approaches for the treatment of substance use disorders;
  • Move empirically supported treatments into mainstream application through dissemination of research findings and practice improvement efforts;
  • Advance the empirical understanding of substance use disorders and support efforts to ameliorate related problems through clinical training provided to physicians, counselors, and other healthcare workers;
  • Investigate the epidemiology, neurobiology, health and social consequences, treatment, and prevention of substance use disorders.

SNAP! Unhypnotizing Hypnotherapy. Opioids from a Physician’s perspective. Dr. Bob, guest.

In today’s show, Dr. Bunny is joined by her friend, Dr. Bob, a longtime physician, to discuss the opioid epidemic, changes in the medical profession, and so much more.  Dr. Bob shares valuable information and insight from his 50 years in the medical field, and tells us how advanced surgeries have become, and how opioid use and prescriptions have changed.

Dr. Bob believes the opioid crisis is the result of multiple factors, and everyone involved – the physicians, drug manufacturers, drug distributors, retailers, public health officials, law enforcement, and policy makers – need to come together to drive meaningful solutions forward.  Dr. Bob says he believes there is no single solution, it’s a partnership to move in the right direction.

According to a recent study, several million people have opioid overuse from opioids they bought on the street, not from a prescription given by a doctor.  This is something that has changed drastically from Dr. Bob’s early career.

These days it is common for a doctor to write a prescription for more pain medication than is actually needed, just in case the patient needs it (or for insurance reasons), however this has led to many people having excess pain meds (opioids) being stored in their medicine cabinets.  This can commonly lead to overuse, use by other family members, or even sales of the opioid to someone who does not need it, which causes a bigger issue.

Dr. Bob encourages everyone to learn more about safer use and storage of medications, and what to do with unused pills.

A very informative & interesting interview that you need to hear!
