Q&A with CIPCUG: Session 16

We Had Several Comments on Samsung Galaxy Note 7 ojesonphonen the Facebook page:  Is it fixed?

Andy Toth  HomeGroup Hell: A new computer has been added to the household. I’ve attempted to connect the three computers to a Homegroup three times with the same effect three times. I got two computers interconnected. When I connected the third, one of the other two got the message ” homegroup unavailable”.

Sue Nethercott How can you tell if your computer is being used for a DDoS attack?

K Edward Lynch how do hackers find and access computers???

Andy Toth  Intel is pretty good at developing processors. However, their video adaptors (far from cards) are very functionally limited. Why don’t they give up while they are ahead?

Sue Nethercott Which is best – Raspberry Pi or Arduino or something else?

Q&A with CIPCUG: Session 15

K Edward Lynch  Transfer of ICANN … good or bad???tobyhandup2

Jerry Crocker Is anyone else having issues with Mozilla thunderbird ?

Lisa Toth  My computer is full of extraneous stuff that I would like to get rid of. Duplicate files and pics. Stuff that has no meaning to me today. Is there an easy way to clean up my computer? I know I could go through file by file and delete stuff but I am wondering if there is a faster way.

Craig Ladd maybe you can use PC Decrapifier

Andy Toth  I updated my machine to the 1607 version of Win10. Afterwards my battery monitor and other acer supplied SWn and folders were deleted (no longer in programs or startup) and not viewable in the installed programs or all programs listing. When I attempted to find my previouisly installed battery program, I was directed to the App Store.

Craig Ladd  been trying to get “NOTES” back on timeline on Facebook, having no success

On the Facebook Page there has been a lively discussion of software.  Here are some of the programs listed in articles posted and Toby’s comments:

LibreOffice

Thunderbird / Lightning

VLC

Q&A with CIPCUG: Session 14

Toby on Yahoo Hack

Toby on Yahoo Hack

Jerry Schrum:  Follow-up question re: today’s discussion about Yahoo. So if I changed my pw, disabled the “security questions,” & set up 2-step verification, but still use the same Yahoo email address to receive notices from Facebook, does that make me vulnerable to issues related to Yahoo hack?

Michael Megowan:  Why have all of my Win 7 desktop icons acquired overlays of the generic file icon? And how do I undo this?

Lisa Toth:  Sometimes when I open Windows Live mail, I find a series of messages 8 or so, which I previously deleted that still somewhat show up..

. The subject and sender is on the left as if the message exists. These are all messages that I had deleted in the last session.

Michael Megowan:  I am trying to connect my Win 7 computer to my wife’s iMac over the home network and can’t figure out how to set up the login credentials on the iMac. I can see the iMac in my Explorer just fine, but I can’t get past the login request from the Mac.

Jerry Crocker: My Samsung Galaxy Note 7 was exchanged to day 🙂 (Friday the 23rd)

K Edward Lynch: so how does a hacker access and “take control” of a computer on the internet??…

K Edward Lynch:  can a hacker access the webcam on a computer that has been disconnected from the network?

Tony Pizza: How secure is the Opera browser now that it is owned by Chinese?

Q&A with CIPCUG: Round 13

Toby at the CIPCUG

Toby at the CIPCUG

Jerry Crocker: A question about: file history; file history took over my drive and filled it up! When did this get turned on?

Sue Nethercott: What are the main causes of a computer becoming slower and slower over time? And is the software that is supposed to cure it any good?

Craig Ladd:  Will Android become dominant OS eventually?

Sue Nethercott: I tried changing the setting, and it made no difference – still 5 out of sequence tweets at the top. Which is odd, since articles like https://www.wired.co.uk/…/twitter-non-chronological… said it would – at least for your timeline. Maybe searches are different.

Sue Nethercott: Amazon has just launched a British version of Echo. Is it any good? What privacy concerns are there?

Sue Nethercott:  Millions’ of Volkswagen cars can be unlocked via hack.

Please see link for more information but they are having a devil of a time with this right now!

A New Wireless Hack Can Unlock 100 Million Volkswagens

Success Story!

Roger Houston:  Just after our August CIPCUG meeting and warnings about opening attachments or clicking on linkages, I reviewed an email sent to my spouse. She responded to some form of advertisement, maybe on Facebook, for FREE Moisturizer & Eye Serum. Just gave them her credit card # to pay S/H of $4.95. We quickly received a short email back to “Confirm Order” that included an Attachment named: Puchasing098712345323.tar.xz

I promptly scanned it with my Bitdefender Total Security product. This gave a popup: “Threats were found” Trojan.GenericKD.3476327. I isolated it, and will shortly shred it. I am super happy and lucky I decided to follow the club’s advice. The credit card immediately had two small charges instead of one. I promptly called the Visa company and had this card and number replaced! >> Follow good advice!

Q&A with CIPCUG – Beware the Blue Screen Hack

The Blue Screen Hack

The Blue Screen Hack

Before we do anything else… We have to applaud the craftsmanship that went into what is called:

“The Blue Screen Hack”

It looks like the blue screen you get when your computer just dies for no real reason, except, at the bottom there is a phone number.  No Error on the face of Microsoft’s software team, included a business card with their error messages, this is a scam, a bad and expensive one to fix too…  Whatever you do. DO NOT CALL.  Call Toby or Mike or Rick. Call them, not the number on the blue screen.  The contact info is at the bottom.

And now for the rest of the program 🙂

From several members:  Please explain the Blue Screen hack.. (see above, and hear about it on the podcast)

Lisa Toth:  I get script errors in Outlook when I try to read some email messages.

Andy Toth:  Is there a way to recover specific files from a Microsoft System Image without having to restore?  What version of Windows?  I’m running Win10 but want files from a Win7 backup.

Bunny Vreeland:  Please comment on the Apple $10,000 Gold Watch

Sue Nethercott: I have a twitter hash tag I check from time to time to see if there are any rare birds in my area at the moment but for a while now it hasn’t been showing me the latest tweets first. Knowing what birds were around last month is useless to me. I unchecked ‘Show me the best Tweets first’ when they introduced the change to the timeline.
