Q&A with CIPCUG: Session Number 11 with Toby Scott

    Consulting Toby at CIPCUG

K. Edward Lynch: Does turning off the network connection prevent access to a PC? Does turning off the NIC card mean more protection? Can a hacker access a PC and turn on a Webcam when the Internet connection is turned off?

Dr. Bunny Vreeland: Twitter suspended 235,000 accounts for promoting Terrorism. What is THAT all about?

Andy Toth: Is there something different in Win10? I need to do a major drive reallocation on my hard drive. The Data drive partition only has 242 MB remaining. I was backing up (copying) the favorites folder but none of the HTTPS addresses copied over.  Win10 kept popping up with some security setting requiring Administrator privilege but would not recognize that I was logged in as administrator and would not copy the files over. I had to skip them to continue.

Tony Pizza: Have you received the anniversary update for Win 10, and if so, your comment?

Sandy Tsutsui-Trujillo: Explain Laptops, and airflow and the overheating issue. I had trouble figuring out what was happening until I was asked:  “Where do you sit when you use your laptop?”

Michael Megowan: I am having difficulty networking (for file sharing purposes) my wife’s iMac with my Windows 7 computer. We have an Airport Extreme router/Time Machine that lets me see the iMac, but I get asked to sign in with a password and I don’t know how to set that up.

Craig Ladd: Is a chrome book adequate for most people?

Craig Ladd: I use is ixquick.com for searches instead of Google.com – are there other search engines that are just as reliable & effective ?

Sue Nethercott: I’m on the road in an RV, and the camp site/supplier says that any problems connecting are due to it acting like a Faraday cage, and we should step outside for better connection. Got any better ideas?

PSA From Toby Scott

If you have an iPhone, update it immediately.  According LookOut Blog, a security update company’s blog site, they announced
the dangers of “Trident” and the security holes iPhone had susceptible to it, please review here for more details and update your iPhone:

“August 25, 2016
3 things CISOs need to know about the Trident iOS vulnerabilities
By Mike Murray

Earlier today, Lookout and Citizen Lab published findings about a sophisticated, targeted, and persistent mobile attack on iOS using three zero-day vulnerabilities we call “Trident.” The attack allows an adversary to silently jailbreak an iOS device and stealthily spy on victims, collecting information from apps including Gmail, Facebook, Skype, WhatsApp, Calendar, FaceTime, Line, Mail.Ru, and others.

This discovery is further proof that mobile platforms are fertile ground for gathering sensitive information from target victims, and well-resourced threat actors are regularly exploiting that mobile environment.”

Jerry Crocker: What is the life-cycle of an SSD drive as compared to a spinning drive.

Sue Nethercott: What are the pros and cons of having two screens instead of one big one, and how do you set it up?

Dr. Bunny Vreeland: Is there a class or school in the Ventura area where you can learn to become a Webmaster?

Jerry Crocker: I find that cloud-based storage is a good thing for when out and about town or on a road trip– With a smart phone, I have access to my Dropbox.  Can you talk more about the wonders of cloud-based storage?

Dr. Bunny Vreeland: Are rebuilt computers a good way to buy a computer if you are on a budget?

Sue Nethercott: I’m familiar with getting DNS errors if a site is on the move, but that sorts itself out after a few hours. However, the last couple of weeks I’ve been getting intermittent DNS errors for example: “Server DNS address could not be found” for various sites. How do I found out whether or not the DNS system is having problems or if it is just a Chrome problem?

Dr. Bunny Vreeland: Could you talk more about Pandora’s new streaming service?

Sue Nethercott What’s the best way of getting good wi-fi if you are travelling in an RV?

Q&A with Toby Scott

Q&A with Toby Scott

Sue Nethercott Which smart phone has the best camera for taking landscapes or pictures of birds, rather than selfies?

Sandy Tsutsui-Trujillo  I don’t like how the VPN I put on my smartphone slows things down so much, it times out. What do I do?

Kathy Van Slyke: I have a Nexus 7 tablet (2012 model) and it is inconsistent in battery charging– sometimes charges, sometimes doesn’t. Generally I have been attempting to charge it when I turn it off at night and do not understand why sometimes it charges and sometimes it doesn’t.

Sandy Tsutsui-Trujillo:  On Downloading – 2 questions:

1.  How do I find a clean download site?

2.  what are the cautions of download sites?

Sue Nethercott: How far has the internet of things reached into the home, in practice?

Dr. Bunny Vreeland:   what is the difference between the functions of Safari, Chrome and Firefox?

Q&A with CIPCUG Session 8

the meeting meets

Jerry Crocker Microsoft Office 365… Is that a good deal for $99 dollars a year?

I needed more cloud storage 🙁 so I got Office 365

Jerry Crocker Is the desk top computer holding its own against laptop/tablets? My smart phone is able to do so much – that I use it more and more.

Lisa Toth  I need to set up a calendar that Andy and I can both access to check before making commitments. With me on the Grand Jury, we now need to coordinate.  If it could happen on our phones (windows) that would be even better.

Michael Megowan  I have a copy of Win 7 pro on a CD that I got from Microsoft when I was a student. Can I use it on a new computer build?

Michael Megowan  If I change the Hard drive(s) on my computer, will I have to buy a new copy of Win 10? Same question for video card. Same question for RAM, CPU or motherboard. I have a good backup of my system using windows backup.

In other words, what is the criteria for a change that requires a new copy of Windows?

Sandra Gelso   When my windows 7 computer would freeze, I could hit control-alt-delete. Task manager would come up, I hit end task, the problem progam would close. Windows 10 isn’t working that way.  When I hit control- alt-delete, what do I do when the box comes up? Now I just shut the computer down.

Q&A with CIPCUG: Session 6

Questions?

Questions?

Sandra Gelso: Toby and Jes, I can’t figure out how to ask questions on Facebook.

This week’s questions are in and thoroughly answered!   Our first question by Sandra, however, was a very ironic twist of surprise for us all since the question was, as we saw to our dismay, posted on Facebook…

Being good sports, we made sure to answer as clearly as possible regardless.  Enjoy the rest of the questions and stay tuned for next week

Bunny Vreeland: While announcing the gradual rollout of its Anniversary update for Windows 10,  Microsoft confirmed that there would be two feature updates coming in 2017. This means moving to a twice-a-year schedule the company had previously set up for its ” Threshold ” updates for Windows 8, which used the codename for that operating system. According to Windows Central , the first update for 10, called “Redstone 2” after this operating system’s nickname, will come in early 2017, followed by “Redstone 3” four to six months later in late summer or early fall. The latest internal builds are around the 14900 range, the site said, meaning testers should soon receive bits of Redstone 2 to try out and give feedback. Source: Windows Central

– Excerpt from: “Microsoft has two big Windows 10 updates slated for 2017”

Jerry Crocker: If a person buys Windows 10…Will future updates/upgrades be free?

Jerry Crocker: If a year from now I build a new computer, can I install MY copy of Windows 10?

Jerry Crocker: If I do as Toby says -> Burn down my computer, can I install Windows 10 from the disk that came with my “Surface Book”?

Jerry Crocker: posted an article that the free upgrade from Windows 7 & 8 to Windows 10 still work.  Comments?
