Q&A with CIPCUG Session 93

Cloudflare

Lisa Toth   On my toshiba laptop w/win 10, the cell for cortana takes up a lot of space on my task bar. Is there a way to fix this?

John Weigle   I have deleted the Opera browser. For the last few days. it has frozen and locked up the computer at the same time. I tried reinstalling, but it didn’t help.

John Weigle   I took the machine to Ventura County Computers, and it worked fine. Michael let me borrow an old router to see if that was the problem. It didn’t solve the problem. I plugged the Spectrum modem directly into the computer, bypassing my router. That didn’t help. So I decided to replace the Spectrum modem. That didn’t work until I changed the ethernet cable. Everything is fine.

John Weigle   The newest version of Firefox has hidden my bookmarks. Fortunately they were imported to Opera.

Free SSL certificate site

John Norbutas   I am aware of the virtues of Onenote, but what about the downside? Is there another app out there that can read onenote files, or are we at the total mercy of microsoft? If MS decides to change or abandon onenote, am I left with a bunch of ones and zeros?

Andy Toth   Last night. My phone received a call from itself. I answered, there was no response on the other end.

Andy Toth   I could be wrong but SSL is only provides identity verification and securer method for transferring sensitive information. It does nothing to protect the user from viruses and malware from a https site that has been hacked. I have a personal website on which I eventually plan to market items. The average monthly cost of the SSL certificate is nearly twice my hosting cost and will most likely not be recoverable in sales. I will be using a third party with SSL to accept payments when and if that happens. The statement that a https in the url assures security is totally misleading.

Andy Toth   After about 4 hours the wired mouse freezes. I have to unplug and plugin for it to function. I experience the same with a USB soundcard. It never happens at the same time. The laptop was purchased in 2012. The USB ports are adjacent to each other, so I doubt they are separate USB 2.0 chips. There are three adjacent ports. The third has a wireless connection to a keyboard. It has not frozen. I’ve switched the port connections around and had the same results.  Any thoughts or suggestions?

Q&A with CIPCUG Session 84

Lisa Toth   I took my phone to the store I bought it from. After re-setting the SDcard manually and trying to re-set it digitally, they decided the card may be bad. They said I may be able to get the pictures off with my computer.  Visit SDcard.org for program

Google Tracking locations

Tony Pizza   After making a disk image, Win 10 wants to make a repair disk, which I did. It also made a recovery usb. Are both needed? If so, what for?

Lisa Toth   Since I became “past president” I’ve been inundated with spam sent to its email address. I took some time today to unsubscribe to as many as I could. At some point in the future I may set up folders for the email I care about but that is going to be a lot of folders.  Did APCUG sell my address?

John Weigle   I have a small external hard drive that I have used for backups, but it no longer shows up on my desktop when I plug it in. I tried plugging it into my laptop, and it shows up with a drive letter and shows the contents when I open it. Any ideas about what I can do to make it work on the desktop? If I remember right, I did try it in an alternate USB plug.

Lisa Toth   I can’t figure out how to make folders and rules in windows live. Does anyone know how? I have windows 10 on my toshiba laptop

Craig Ladd   puzzling: writing original post in FB not possible, FB app let’s me do that, blue tooth keyboard does, latest version FireFox does, but using Chrome does not.

Q&A with CIPCUG Session 74

Lisa Toth   Some time ago I asked what “snap” is.

Roger Houston   I have mixed results installing Win-10 v-1709. Laptop installed perfectly. Faster desktop will NOT install!!! It seems like it is just doing a normal Reboot/Restart. Three times I used the fix errors in Window install. I selected to fix minor ones that were found, however, I still got normal restarts and no v-1709. No warnings to not turn off system during update. No auto restarts either.
