Q&A with CIPCUG Session 101

Microsoft meets GDPR requirements

Tony Pizza   Window 10 file manager is slow, “working on it”. I’m considering trying Free Commander. Looks like something I used on DOS and WIn 3.1. Any other recommendations? What sites are safe to download from? I forgot what ones to avoid.

Andy Toth   What’s the secret to sharing drives between computers on Windows 10 Home? The computers are all in the same workgroup. I’ve set the properties of the drive enable sharing and allow everyone full control. I enabled file and printer sharing in Network and Sharing Center. Not using passwords to connect is also activated.  Every time there’s an update all file sharing and the homegroup disappear.

Lisa Toth   I have a couple of magazines I get digitally as downloads. One I received recently is 22 plus MB. I’d like to store them to read more than once.  What is the best way?

Donn Coon   Like many other CIPCUG members I’ve heard about, my latest Firefox download has provided a miserable browser. I have another browser (Chrome) but it’s nearly as miserable for me to work with.

Lisa Toth   Please comment on the upcoming update in the fall.  What is “redstone” and explain tabs in programs/apps coming then?

John Weigle   My CanoScan 97000F scanner died after the last Windows 10 update. It keeps insisting that the driver might not have installed correctly and to reinstall it. I’ve done that several times without a change.

Google Assistant AI

Lisa Toth   Recently I have discovered I can’t post to some sites even when there is a form to do so. These are sites where I have purchased something and they ask for a review.  Is there a setting I need to change?

Jerry Crocker   Update to Windows 10 April Update went well.

Toby Scott   On reboot, my wife received a message that a Microsoft update had blocked an HP monitoring software program aimed at keeping printers working and reporting back when they don’t.

Cloudflare

Lisa Toth   On my toshiba laptop w/win 10, the cell for cortana takes up a lot of space on my task bar. Is there a way to fix this?

John Weigle   I have deleted the Opera browser. For the last few days. it has frozen and locked up the computer at the same time. I tried reinstalling, but it didn’t help.

John Weigle   I took the machine to Ventura County Computers, and it worked fine. Michael let me borrow an old router to see if that was the problem. It didn’t solve the problem. I plugged the Spectrum modem directly into the computer, bypassing my router. That didn’t help. So I decided to replace the Spectrum modem. That didn’t work until I changed the ethernet cable. Everything is fine.

John Weigle   The newest version of Firefox has hidden my bookmarks. Fortunately they were imported to Opera.
